Toughness Training Assignment #3 – Resilience = Coming Back Stronger

Team Gymnasts and Parents –

For the next couple weeks we will be talking about building resilience in gymnastics and how to push yourself to be even better at the next competition/practice.  We won’t be printing hard copies this week (since I found so many of them still in mailboxes the past two times), but we highly encourage you to print this page at home and discuss with your gymnasts how to set goals that will include pushing themselves to be even stronger!

Boys Information

Warm-ups: The cost for warm-ups is $85. We will size the gymnasts and place the order. All you need to do is pay by October 10th. Let the front desk know if you’d like it taken from the card you have on file. The level 3’s are not required to purchase warm-ups, but you are welcome to. All boys level 4+ must purchase the new warm-up. If you don’t buy them for this year, they will be required for the following year when your child moves to level 4.
Competition Uniforms: If you have pants, shorts, or a singlet that are too small that you would like to sell, please reply all to this email with the size and how much you are asking. Any pieces you still need must be ordered by October 26th. If you know what you need and the size, please email me asap. Otherwise, let me know what you need and I’ll figure out the size. Level 3’s do not need to order competition gear. They must purchase a Wildcard shirt for $15 and wear plain black shorts, no markings or stripes, for any competitions or shows.
Sheboygan Meet: Sheboygan is hosting a meet for all boys levels 3-7 the weekend of October 19th. The cost is $15. This is a small meet that the boys would basically use as a practice. I would highly encourage everyone to attend if possible. This is a great way to see what we really need to work on before the season starts. I am checking on the exact time for this, and will let you know asap. Payment and commitment must be remitted by next Saturday, October 12th. There will be no practice on October 19th for levels 3-7.
Wildcard Meet: The girls home meet is the weekend of October 26th. We are going to host our annual pre-season meet in conjunction with this. We are tentatively planning for the mock meet on Saturday morning. Stretching will be at 7:45, with warm-ups starting at 8am. The competition should conclude by 11:30. This is a required event for all boys levels 3-7. Obviously, there is no practice for anyone this day.

Spirit Days and Girls’ State Apparel Orders

Spirit Friday/Saturday — Girls’ team members have decided to designate Fridays (and Saturdays for Level 2) as Spirit Days prior to meets. We think this is a fantastic idea to promote team spirit and we are encouraging this. So this Friday for Levels 3-9 and Saturday for Level 2 girls, we are asking they wear a purple leotard–preferably this year’s exhibition leotard–to practice. If your gymnasts competes in their exhibition leotard, they should not wear it to practice, but should try to find another purple or black leotard. Also, we encourage all members of the team to wear a Wildcard Gymnastics t-shirt or other gear to school to show their team spirit.

Also, the week of our home meet, we will have a theme day for each day of practice, similar to what high schools do for homecoming (no dance Saturday night, sorry).

Level 3, 4, 5 State Apparel and Good Luck Ads — T-shirts and sweatshirts for the Level 3, 4, 5 State Meet (Dec. 7-8 in Mequon) are available. Click here for all the details regarding the state meet including order forms for the clothing and good luck ads for your gymnast. Please note that apparel orders are do in mid November to Wildcard Gymnastics. Good luck ads go directly to the host club.

Level 2 State Apparel and Good Luck Ads — We are not doing pre-orders for the Level 2 State Championship meet (Dec. 14-15 at Wildcard Gymnastics). We will try to make the booth available to Wildcard families prior to the meet so you can have the first crack at your selection. We are doing good-luck ads, so please click here for information on that. Please note that there is a flower order form for Level 2 state. DO NOT ORDER FLOWERS. As is per Wildcard custom, we give floral arrangements to our girls’ gymnasts and are taking care of this cost.

Congratulations — As we promote success through our gymnasts, we have created a wall with pictures of every gymnasts who scores a 9.0 or higher (not including Level 2 or Level 3 vault) or wins an event or All-Around at a meet. We’re still collecting and printing pictures, so it’s not completely updated yet. Here is who was added to the success wall this week:

Level 3
Ella J. — 9.050 on bars
Kamryn W. — 9.125 on floor

Level 4
Sofia B. — first-place on vault (second straight week)
Hattie B. — 9.350 on bars (tying the club record)
Delaney H. — 9.350 on vault (setting a new club record), 9.150 on bars, 9.200 on beam, 9.150 on floor, first place on vault and bars and first place in the All-Around (shattering the club record in the process with a 36.850)
Camille P. — 9.150 on bars, first place on bars

All-in-all this was a very successful meet for Wildcard. Virtually every gymnast went up, many by several points. Delaney H. was our most improved gymnast over the week, going up nearly 50 percent of the amount she could have possibly improved. Also, the Level 4 team as a whole was very successful, with most every gymnast improving more than 10 percent. The Level 4 team score also went up a whopping four points and the team finished 5th in a very strong meet, placing higher than some of the better teams in the state. Other clubs took notice of how good our kids looked.

Additionally, after the first meet, we only had 10 of our 31 gymnasts qualify to state. After the second meet, we only have 23 state qualifiers with several more really close. Way to go! (For those of you who don’t know what state qualification is, a gymnast qualifies to state with an all-around score of 33.000 in Level 3, 32.000 in Level 4 and 31.000 in Level 5; Level 2 gymnasts qualify to state by competing in two meets during the regular season).

This weeks’ theme is consistency. The goal is to have everyone continue to improve at a steady pace and not have any set backs. Consistency is being able to do all of your skills at a high level over and over again.

Fundraisers — By now, every gymnast should have received their fund-raising packet. In addition to pasta, we have added coffee, fudge and bake-at-home cookies.

Shoulder Bags — For the gymnasts who don’t have a Wildcard Gymnastics bag to use at competitions, please purchase a shoulder bag from us for just $5.

Level 2, 3 Practice Times, Shoulder Bags, Boys’ Warm Ups

Girls’ Level 2 Updated Practice Schedule — Girls’ Level 2 parents and gymnasts, due to the early session for the Level 3s on Saturday, we are moving the Level 2 practice from Saturday to Friday night. Normally, meets have the Level 2s scheduled first on Saturday so we don’t anticipate moving them often, but in this case we do. So, the Level 2s will practice on Friday, Sept. 27 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. THERE WILL BE NO LEVEL 2 PRACTICE ON SATURDAY, SEPT. 28.

Additionally, due to the fact that the next weekend there is no competition on Saturday, we are keeping the Level 2 practice on Saturday instead of on Friday. We previously posted that there would be practice for the Level 2s on Friday, Oct. 4, but they will have their regularly scheduled practice on Saturday, Oct. 5 from 9 a.m.-noon.

The updated Level 2 schedule is (other practice times remain the same):
Friday, Sept. 27: Level 2s practice 4:30-7:30 p.m.
Saturday, Sept. 28: no Level 2 practice
Friday, Oct. 4: no Level 2 practice
Saturday, Oct. 5: Level 2s practice 9 a.m.-noon

Girls’ Level 3 Practice on Friday — Due to the early morning session on Saturday, Sept. 28, we are ending the Level 3s practice on Friday, Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m. Parents should pick their child up then, take them home, get them fed, and get them a good night’s rest in preparation for the next day’s meet. Level 3 gymnasts should not be at Open Gym on Friday.

shoulder-bagShoulder Bags — Due to the large amount of girls’ coming to the meet last week without a gym bag or with a bag that didn’t look like they belonged to a team, we have made small shoulder bags available for only $5. Gymnasts should not bring anything other than this shoulder bag, a Wildcard gym bag or a Wildcard back pack on to the floor for meets. These bags are economical and should hold a warm-up and some small items (probably won’t hold shoes other than flip flops). These aren’t huge, so don’t expect to pack a lot into these bags, but they will represent Wildcard Gymnastics well. They are available at the front desk and in the pro shop.

photo-4Boys’ Warm-Ups — After much deliberation, we have finally decided on a boys’ warm-up for the upcoming season (and hopefully for at least two seasons). The previous warm-ups we have are no longer being made and the stock is unavailable. We expect these designs to be available for a while, so we should get at least two seasons out of them. These are soccer warm-ups so they are designed sharply. The top is mostly purple with black areas and white piping (see at right). The bottoms are all black with white piping. The material is fairly heavy and will be good for winter competition season. The costs are $82 for youth sizes and $85 for adult sizes (this includes all embroidery, shipping and taxes). They are available in typical youth sizes and adult sizes. We have the youth small in stock. Please have these paid for by October 10 so we can place the order and have them in time for the start of meet season in December. We have one Youth Small in stock to help with sizing. The youth small seems to be kind of big.

Cancun Deposit Due Friday, Sept. 20

This is a reminder that all deposits for those wishing to go on the Cancun trip need to be paid by Friday. The deposit is $50 per person (if you are wishing to fly or stay with the group at the group rate). Meet fees of $120 per competing gymnast are due to Wildcard Gymnastics by Oct. 15 (Level 7-9 girls do not need to pay this fee as their meet fees include the Cancun Classic.

For those gymnasts and families not traveling with the Wildcard Group and traveling on their own, we simply need the $120 meet fee by Oct. 15.

For those of you able to travel on your own, there is a very good deal on flights right now, but you need to be a bit flexible. Frontier announced a fare sale on its Milwaukee to Cancun direct route. The round trip cost is between $363.35. However, this is only available on Wednesdays (Jan. 15-22) as that is the only day Frontier flies from Milwaukee direct to Cancun (otherwise it’s through Denver and it’s twice as expensive), so if you can do Wednesday to Wednesday, you can fly round trip at a great rate. If you choose this option, you need to book this flight on your own.

Toughness Training Assignment

Last year as a team we worked on developing a mentality of Excellence in the gym.  We had a discussion about various key words or phrases and then sent home a weekly worksheet that explained the topic and provided the gymnasts with something to focus on during their training/meets.

This year, we are focusing on Success.  We have talked about the idea that success not only means good scores and winning medals, but also doing excellent routines and performing at the highest level of their ability.  Part of achieving success is preparing through toughness training, both physically and mentally, and combining this with our philosophy of excellence.  Of course, we are working hard on the physical training but the mental training needs to be practiced both at the gym and in everyday situations.

Here is this week’s Toughness Training Worksheet.  We also put a copy in the gymnasts’ mailboxes in the locker rooms. (Although, we’d like to save some trees by not printing out copies in the future.)  Please help us achieve Success by discussing these ideas with your gymnast and encouraging them to put in the extra effort at home.  Let’s make this competitive season a huge success!!

Success through Toughness Training – Week 1

Reminders About Meet Season

Parents, with the start of the competition season this week, this is a quick primer regarding some information to remember for meet season:

  • There is no need to ask us what time or which day your gymnast will compete at a meet in the future. We post all of that information on the blog the instant we have it we have it. We do not hold it or not disclose it. We share that information immediately (hence it gets updated from time to time). Meet schedules come about two weeks prior to the competition. This includes our own competitions. So, if you haven’t heard about the schedule, we haven’t heard about the schedule.
  • Please remember that no one other than certified coaches and registered athletes may be on the competition floor during a meet. We could get penalized as gym if this happens.
  • No flash photography at meets. It’s believed that flash photography distracts gymnasts and they could possibly get hurt.
  • There will be admission charges at each meet ranging from as little as $5 to as much as $15, pending on the meet. Typically in the fall, expect a $6-7 entry fee.
  • We encourage gymnasts to stay or come early and cheer on their teammates. You shouldn’t have to pay admission for a competing gymnast to watch another session. If they are able, we will try to allow them to sit with their teammates on the competition floor, but we can’t guarantee that we will be able to.
  • Gymnasts should come to the meet dressed in their leotards for girls or singlets and shorts/pants/socks for boys. All gymnasts should arrive wearing your warm-ups with their gym bag. Gymnasts should also have a small snack and water in their gym bag. Gymnasts should also should take their grips home from the gym on Fridays when there is a meet. Also girls’ gymnasts should have their hair done neatly and make-up done prior to arrival. Do not expect that the coaches will be able to do your hair or make-up. With the number of gymnasts on our team and the limited time between sessions, there isn’t enough time.
  • If your gymnast is competing in the morning on Saturday, they should not attend or stay for Friday night open gym. If a gymnast is competing on Sunday morning, they should not attend Saturday night open gym.
  • Please arrive on time to your meets. If you are running late or will not make it, please let one of Alison (414-737-1458), Amy (414-303-5195) or Blain (414-737-1457).
  • We post scores and accolades to our website in the team section as quickly as we possibly can. Please let us know if you see an inaccuracy. Also, we try to post meet photos regularly in the photos section on our website as well. Be sure you check out all of our information on the website.
  • We are hosting four meets this season and in order to make our meets successful, we need parent and gymnast volunteers. With more than 100 kids on our competitive teams, if each parent and their child donates just one or two sessions of time during the season, the volunteer time will be shared equally amongst our team and the burden won’t be placed on a few families and the coaching staff (who have kids on the team as well).

With the last-minute cancellation of some events lately, we have done our best to communicate those as best we can. It has come to our attention during this process that we don’t have a cell phone contact for every family. If each of you could stop by the front desk and provide your current cell phones, we would be very appreciative.
