Mental Toughness Homework – Positive Thinking

Positive Thinking Games

Focusing on the positive or “reframing” things that don’t go as planned, help to make a more confident, adaptable athlete.  This builds mental toughness and makes gymnasts capable of accepting anything that comes their way.  Here are some fun activities that will help develop positive thinking and improve confidence.

1.  Recognizing Positive Behavior

First brainstorm a list of positive behaviors. (Example someone who gives credit to others, smiles, says thank you, listens without being judgmental and absorbs negative behavior with tolerance, etc.) Think of people who exhibit these characteristics.  Do people like this person?  Why do you think that is?

2.  The “Glad” Game

The character Pollyanna from the Disney movie of the same name plays a positive thinking game she calls “the glad game.” This game helps increase positive thinking habits. One person brings up a negative event, such as losing a job or a bowling league tournament, and starts off saying something like, “My coach won’t let me leave balance beam.” Other players provoke the first player to think positively by starting off a phrase, such as, “But because you get to stay on beam, you’ll have more time to–blank.” The first player fills in the blank with a positive word or phrase, like “practice your skills,” or “get your cartwheel better than anyone else’s.” Searching for the silver lining in even a relatively disastrous event is the optimistic basis for the “glad game.”

 3.  Hunt for Happiness

A positive-thinking scavenger hunt game is suitable for children and adults. Children or adults make a list of things that they feel make life worth living. For children, Fishful Thinking says to have them work up a list of animals, people or places that make them happy or bring smiles to their faces. Parents or teachers then help the children spend about an hour on a scavenger hunt, searching for as many items on the list as possible. Once the child discovers an item, she can place a sticker on or draw a smiley face next to the item.

 4.  Egg-Balancing Game

A potentially messy game that requires plenty of positive thinking is the egg-balancing game, in which an individual has to balance the wider part of a raw egg on a flat, somewhat textured tabletop. This exercise is possible, but requires patience and a positive attitude. Hard-boiled eggs won’t work, since they tend to wobble and fall over because of the weight of the cooked yolk at the bottom. If players are unable to stand the egg upright, all is not lost. Sprinkle a small mound of salt on the table and balance the egg in it. Having the person resort to using salt illustrates that many things are possible but may require some outside-the-box thinking to achieve.

5.  Commercial Campaign

After playing these games, make a 30 sec. video using Instagram, Vine, your iPhone, etc. that advertises yourself as a gymnast.  Sell yourself as Wildcard’s best gymnast.  You can use video, pictures, graphics, etc.  Be creative!  Send your video to gymnastics@wildcard-gymnastics.com or upload it to the Wildcard Facebook page, tweet it, etc.  We want to see those videos!

Team Practice only on Jan. 7

Wildcard Gymnastics will be closed to recreational classes (including any Gold Bugs non-competing gymnasts) on Tuesday, January 7, due to continued extreme cold.

We will, however, have a team practice as regularly scheduled from 4:30-8:30 p.m. If you feel it is not safe for your child to come, that is understandable. The building was maintaining a temperature between 65-68 degrees today. Gymnasts may wear leggings during practice to help stay warm.

Wildcard Closed Jan. 6

Due to the miserable weather conditions forecast for Monday, Jan. 6, Wildcard Gymnastics will not be open. We anticipate that we will be open for classes and practice on Tuesday, but that will be a decision that will be made likely on Monday, following what school districts decide.

We will attempt to open the building during the “warmest” part of the day for practice for gymnasts competing at the M&M Challenge (Girls’ Level 8-9 and Boys’ Level 4-7) and for gymnasts competing at the Cancun Classic (select girls from Levels 3, 6, 8 & 9) so they don’t miss one of their practices prior to a meet. We haven’t firmly decided up on a time, but at this point it is tentatively scheduled for noon-3:30 p.m. We will make a decision on time later and contact those gymnasts and families directly either by text or e-mail. However, if we can’t get the building to a comfortable temperature during the day we will not have practice.

Stay warm everyone!

Success Homework – Increasing your Focus!

During the Girls’ compulsory season we spent a lot of time on Mental Training.  Since the Optionals, the Boys’ Team, and many of the gymnasts will compete in off-season meets, this mental training will be on-going. We are going to continue  to have homework that will benefit the gymnasts and keep them working on the mental skills necessary for successful performances.  The Optional team also has homework in the “Sticking It” book along these same themes to further reinforce the mental training exercises.  Please encourage your gymnasts to spend some time during the week practicing these techniques, responding to questions, etc.

Increasing Focus and Concentration

7 Easy, No-nonsense Concentration Exercises

By Operation-Meditation

1. Count backwards

Find a comfortable spot where no one can disturb you and start mentally counting from 100 to 1. Feel free to increase that number—500, 1000—depending on what you feel you’re capable of doing.

2. Count backwards: with variations

This is similar to the first one, but in this case, you can vary the count by skipping numbers. For instance, you can skip by threes (100, 97, 94 and so on) or by fives (100, 95, 90 and so on). The additional mental load of calculating the numbers as you skip can further increase the intensity of the concentration required to keep the numbers right.

3. Count words

As far as effective concentration exercises go, this particular mental activity is highly effective in sharpening your mental focus. Get any book—a novel or a school textbook—and try counting the words in any single paragraph. When you get better, start upping the ante: count the words on an entire page, then two pages, then five pages, then finally, count the words in an entire chapter. Take note that you must do the counting entirely mentally and using only your eyes—do not use your finger in pointing at each word.

4. Observe

Get any physical object—a fruit, a small furniture, a toy—and examine it closely and carefully. Take note of its characteristics and features while keeping your mind from straying away and starting to entertain other thoughts—keep your complete attention on the thing you currently have in your hands. Take note of its color, shape, texture, even the smell.

5. Focus on a single word

Find a nice quiet spot where you can stay for at least five minutes without anyone interrupting you. As in the previous concentration exercises, this also requires you to laser-point your thoughts on a single target—this time, a single word of your choice. It doesn’t matter what word as long as it’s inspiring. “Love,” “courage” “happiness,” or “success” are good examples. Repeat the word mentally in your mind for five minutes. When you feel your concentration is improving, you can increase the duration to 10 minutes.

6. Observe without thinking

This exercise is similar to (4), but this time, you will observe any chosen object (fruit, furniture, kitchen utensil) without any mental verbalization. That is, make the act of observing completely blank as much as possible. Basically, for five or so minutes, you should look at your chosen object from all sides and angles without thinking anything about it.

7. Observe and conjure

This is the logical next step to steps 4 and 6: this time, after observing your chosen object for a few minutes, close your eyes and mentally picture the object as you’ve seen it. Visualize it by “examining” the object mentally: turn it around in your mind and take note of its features and physical characteristics while shutting out any irrelevant or stray thought.

Improving your concentration and sharpening your mental focus through the aforementioned concentration exercises can bring about countless benefits to your life, career and health. Better concentration, for instance, can significantly improve the power of your meditation sessions. When you meditate to eliminate stress from your life, attract success or simply achieve better health, your enhanced power of concentration will not only make your meditations much more focused, but also easier to perform as well.

New Girls’ Team Levels and Practice Times

Happy New Year!  Let’s make 2014 even more successful than last year!

New Levels — By now, all of you have received information about the gymnasts who are moving up. If you haven’t received your new level by e-mail, please let us know and don’t just assume that your gymnast has moved up.

We’ve done our best to create smaller groups so we can have 10-12 team gymnasts per coach on an event. So please come to your assigned times where possible. There are a few exceptions to this list and we’ve spoken with those of you individually.

Also, we’ve had a rash of gymnasts showing up to practice 40-45 minutes early. That’s creating quite a bit of problems for us as we do not have the means or the space to watch all the extra kids in the building prior to 4:30 p.m. Often times, a Wildcard staff member is not even present when gymnasts start arriving. The high school team arrives at 3:30 p.m. and they are not responsible for our gymnasts who are in the building. Plus they have access to the space prior to 4:30 p.m. Gymnasts who are in the building that early either need to be in the locker room or on the bleachers. We would appreciate it if gymnasts weren’t dropped off prior to 20 minutes before practice. That should be enough time to get changed and ready for practice.

Also, former Level 5s that were used to coming at 4:30 p.m. should now be coming at 5:30 p.m. They should be working with their group at that time instead of with the HOPEs group at 4:30 p.m.

The girls’ will be addressed by their new levels and should line up by their new levels starting Jan. 2. The practice time is the following for each level:

Girls’ Level 2 (formerly Gold Bugs II Competing)
Tuesdays and Thursdays — 4:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m.
Saturdays — 9 a.m.-noon
*** There will be occasional meet weekends that these gymnasts will be asked to come on Fridays instead of Saturdays. We will do our best to keep that from happening, but coach availability and meet schedule may dictate moving. We will do our best to give you as much notice as possible.

Girls’ Level 3
Tuesdays and Thursdays — 4:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m.

Girls’ Level 3/4
Mondays and Wednesdays — 4:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m.
Fridays — 4:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m.

Girls’ Level 4
Mondays and Wednesdays — 4:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m.
Fridays — 4:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m.

Girls’ Level 6
Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays — 5:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. (please do not arrive at 4:30)
Fridays — 4:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m.

Girls’ Level 8
Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays — 5:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m.
Fridays — 4:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m.

Girls’ HOPES
Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays — 4:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m., with the option of going until 8:30 p.m.
Fridays — 4:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m.
Saturdays — 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Girls’ Fast Track & Xcel no change in practice time

Girls’ TOPS (price will be reduced to $35, girls will work more on competitive skills than conditioning. We feel that our current conditioning will accommodate. Instructors will be rotated as Vicky is not working with us as much any more due to a new job.)
Mondays — 4 p.m.-5:30 p.m.
Saturdays — 9 a.m.-11 a.m.

Boys’ Team
The only change to practice times is that Thursday practice will be from 4:30 -7:30 p.m.

Fund-raising orders — By now, we have received all the fund-raising late orders in. That is available for pick up. There are still some discrepancies, specifically with the coffee. We haven’t received any rainforest crunch, pumpkin spice and a couple of Colombian. We do have some extra of other flavors that if you are willing to substitute, we can do so now. Otherwise, if you have picked up everything including the last amount we just received and are still missing pasta, coffee, cookies or fudge, let us know by Saturday so we can get a final batch sent to us.
