4th of July Schedule/Parades

Practice Schedule, Rest of Week — The Girls’ Team practice schedule will be slightly adjusted this week due to the holiday and parades. The following is the Girls’ Team practice schedule for the week:

Wednesday, July 2 — Morning practice unchanged; no evening practice (West Allis parade)

Thursday, July 3 — Morning practice unchanged; evening practice unchanged (TOPs will have an added practice starting at 3:30 p.m.)

Friday, July 4 — No practice (Wauwatosa/Brookfield parades)

Saturday, July 5 — No practice

The practice schedule will return to normal on Monday, July 7.

As a side note, there are no Wildcard Recreation Classes this week, but there are Brookfield Recreation Department Classes through Thursday.

Parades — We will have three parades in the coming days to celebrate our nation’s independence. Girls should wear an old Fourth of July leotard. If your gymnast does not have one of those, an exhibition or Wildcard leotard will suffice. If your gymnast has neither, a Wildcard t-shirt will work as a third choice. If none of those work, any leotard as a last resort will be OK. Parents walking in the parade should wear a Wildcard t-shirt. Boys should wear a singlet or a Wildcard shirt. The only parents who may march with us are the parent volunteers. We have limited adult sizes in t-shirts but have sufficient children sizes. We will be open Wednesday morning and Thursday if you need a t-shirt.  Please call before you come to be sure we have a shirt in the necessary size.

The West Allis Parade is Wednesday, July 2. All team and pre-team gymnasts and Gold Bugs are invited to participate. Gymnasts should be dropped off on 77th Street between Greenfield and Pierce in space number 100. Gymnasts should be dropped off by 6:30 p.m. The parade starts at 7 p.m. and should be completed by 8 p.m. The parade route goes from 77th and Greenfield to 70th St., turns right, and concludes at Vet Park on 77th and National. It will be a relatively quick parade route, so please be prompt when picking up your child. We will not have the staff to wait with your children.  There are kids’ activities at the Park where the parade ends, if you want to partake in any of those after the parade.

The Wauwatosa Parade is Friday, July 4. Fast Track, Girls’ Level 3, Level 3/4, Girls’ Levels 8-up, and all boys’ team are invited to this parade. The parade begins at 9 a.m. Please have your gymnast at spot 49 at the Wauwatosa Library on Wauwatosa (76th St.) and North Avenues around 8:30 a.m.  The parade will proceed from that spot to Mayfair Mall (opposite its usual direction). Please be available for your gymnast at the Cheesecake Factory parking lot immediately after the parade.

The Brookfield Parade is Friday, July 4. All Gold Bugs, Girls’ Level 2, Girls Level 4, Girls Level 6 and Xcel are invited to this parade. The parade begins at 10 a.m. Please have your gymnast at spot 35 at Brookfield Central High School by 9:30 a.m. The parade starts on Calhoun and Gebhardt, moving down Calhoun to North Avenue and then turns left on North Avenue Norhardt Drive. This parade is a short, fast-moving parade. Please be prompt to pick up your gymnast at the Ruby Isle Shopping Center (near Yo Mama!).

For each parade, don’t forget your gloves, tennis shoes, and socks.  Bring a water bottle to share. If you freeze half a water bottle the night before and fill it with water in the morning, it will be nice and cold and melt throughout the morning.  We will need a couple of parents to help hold the banner and hand out brochures.

If you have multiple children split among parades, please go to the parade of your oldest child.

Competition Leotards Past Due — Fees for the competition leotards are past due. Long sleeve competition leotards for girls were due Friday, June 13 and that cost is either $140 (Level 2, 3, 4) or $150 (Level 5, 6, 8/9) pending on the level of the gymnast. Level 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8/9 should order this leotard which will be used for two years. Fast track, Gold Bugs 2 and Xcel Silver/Gold may order this leotard as well but it is not mandatory. If you aren’t sure if you have purchased this leotard, please ask at the front desk.

Girls’ Competition Fees Starting in July — The first installment of meet fees for girls’  Levels 2, 3 and 4 are due July 15. Please pay prior to then or you will be billed and charged on July 15. Subsequent installments are due August 15 and September 15. The meet fee installments are:

Level 2: $65 (three installments for $195)
Level 3: $145 (three installments for $435)
Level 4: $150 (three installments for $450)

Boys’ all levels, and Girls’ Levels 6-8 and the winter/spring Level 2s will have meet fees due later in the year.

AAU Junior Olympics — AAU Junior Olympics registration is now closed, but they typically extend the registration a few days. If you are interested in participating in the meet, please let us know ASAP and we can still try to get you in. The cost is $85 and the meet is July 27-30 in Des Moines, Iowa.

Secret U.S. Classic — Every year, they hold the U.S. Classic in secret, but we always find out about it (kidding, Secret is the sponsor). The competition is an elite-level girls’ competition at the Sears Centre Arena at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2 in Hoffman Estates, Ill. We can get group tickets for $25 per person if we order at least 10 tickets. Please place your U.S. Classic Order by July 16 if you are interested. We will not be providing transportation to the event. Additionally, there is a junior elite session at 1 p.m. if you decide to make a day of it. We will not be getting tickets to the junior elite session. You can buy those at the box office if you so desire.

AAU Nationals and Badger State Success — Our off-season summer competition schedule started off with a bang at the AAU Age Group Nationals in Disney Resort, Fla. Wildcard had seven gymnasts compete over the course of four days with the following medals won:

Essence B. — 6th place vault in Level 3
Aaliyah K. — medaled in three of four events and took 5th in the All-Around in Level 4
Hallie F. — took fourth place in the All-Around in Open Optional
West F. — Was the national floor and vault champion in a 12-competitior, 9-under Level 4 boys group (he’s only 5!). He also placed on two other events and was fifth All-Around. A day later, he won the Free Run in Level 2 Freestyle Acrobatics in an 8-under age division. He also took second place on both speed runs. West won a total of 8 medals (3 gold) at the national championships!

A week later, several gymnasts competed at the Badger State Games. Nine Wildcard Gymnasts won 29 gold medals at the event, making it a huge success for us. The gymnasts won the following medals:

Caelyr G. — Won all four events and All-Around, Level 2
Mariyah G. — Won three of four events and All-Around, Level 3
Nora L. — Won two events, Level 3
Aaliyah — Won all four events and all-around, Level 4; Won Mini Tumbling
Emily G. — Took second on beam and third on all other events and All-Around, Level 4; Fourth in Mini Tumbling
Norah T. — Took second on three events and the all-around
Bradyn F. — Won all four events and All-Around, Level 6; Third in Mini Tumbling
Hallie F. — Won all four events and All-Around, Open; Won Youth Tumbling
West F. — Won Tiny Tumbling

Please consider these events for future years. Next year’s AAU Age Group Nationals will be at the Riviera Hotel and Casino June 10-14 in Las Vegas. Next year’s Badger State Games have not been set.

Conditioning

We are still doing T25  for any parents that want to join us.  It’s a great workout and really helps provide good role models for the kids when they have their parent doing it too.  Mondays and Wednesdays T25 starts at 7:45 p.m.  Tuesdays and Thursdays T25 begins at 7:00 p.m.  Fridays we do T25 right away at 9:00 a.m.   This version of T25 (Gamma) uses weights.  We have limited weights at the gym.  Some kids have asked about getting their own; we love that idea.  If you purchase a set of 5 pounds (or lighter) weights for your gymnast, please have them put their names on them.  Also, we had some kids ask about the sliders that we use to work on splits.  The sliders are actually furniture movers that you can buy at Home Depot/Lowes.  They come in a 4 pack so you can split it with a friend and the best thing is you can use it around the house, so it’s a functional purchase too!  We highly encourage the gymnasts to get sliders that they can use at home!

He was one of 36 gymnasts in Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa and Minnesota who qualified to a all-expenses paid camp put on by Region 4 men’s gymnastics later this summer in Lincoln, Neb. Again, only 36 of the top level 7s, 8s, 9s and 10s in the region are invited to this camp. He qualified based on his placement at regionals earlier this year.  Great job by Reed and his coaching staff, specifically Candace.

Badger State Games & Summer Practice…

Badger State games is a go.  Hopefully we will have more info by the end of the day.  Gymnasts will compete on Saturday, time TBD.

For summer practice – please make sure to have a water bottle and tennis shoes.  It might be advisable to keep a towel and swimsuit or extra leotard in your bags or lockers; especially those really hot days.

Please make sure you register for the Banquet!  And don’t forget that if you are a Level 2 or higher you are required to order the long sleeve competition leotard  ($140 compulsories; $150 for optionals).  We would recommend that Gold Bugs II at least purchase these as they are planning to compete in the Fall.

We should have more information on the June 25th Greendale Library show coming soon. The Level 2-6 should plan to attend, as well as a few optionals.

Exhibition Leos Past Due

Exhibition Leotards — Payment for exhibition leotards was due Friday, June 6. For those of you who didn’t indicate to go ahead and make this charge to your account, we have done that for those gymnasts who have competed before. If your account could not be charged with the information we have on file, your name will be listed below. For Fast Track and Xcel, or newly turned Level 2, please be aware that these need to be purchased so we can place the order. These will be your gymnasts competition leotard for the upcoming season. Your gymnast will be sized next week.

The following gymnasts still need to pay for exhibition leotards according to our records:

Girls’ Fast Track — All gymnasts
Girls’ Level 2 Purple — Neave D., Jennifer H., Kaelyn L., Emily V.
Girls’ Level 2 — Claire M.
Girls’ Level 3 — Emma M., Maggie M.
Girls’ Level 4 — Aniyah B., Kerigan S., Taylor T.
Girls’ Level 6 — Sofia B.
Girls’ Level 8/9 — Rose D., Ava G., Bella G., Ashley W.
Girls’ Xcel — Amari D., Mikayla V., Mariyah V., Stephanie Y.

Gold Bugs 2 (if you are reading this blog) should also order an exhibition leotard. The following gymnasts HAVE purchased leos: Jillian C., Sydney L., Mia W.

Please remit payment for this ASAP so we may order these leotards.

Long sleeve competition leotards for girls are due Friday, June 13 and that cost is either $140 (Level 2, 3, 4) or $150 (Level 5, 6, 8/9) pending on the level of the gymnast. Level 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8/9 should order this leotard which will be used for two years. Fast track, Gold Bugs 2 and Xcel Silver/Gold may order this leotard as well but it is not mandatory.

Boys’ team singlets are $45 and are due by Friday, June 13 as well. This is for all Boys Level 4, 5/6 and 8. No gymnasts have paid for this as of yet.

Team Tryout Wrap-Up — Parents, thank you for having your gymnasts ready for our Girls’ Level 3 and 4 tryout on Friday night. Many of the gymnasts exceeded expectations and on a whole we were very pleased with what we saw. We will try to compile all the data this weekend and have evaluations and recommendations ready by Monday.

Team Tryouts and More

Girls’ Level TryoutsThis Friday, June 6, will be the the tryouts for the Girls’ Level 3s and 4s. Gymnasts should arrive at 4:30 p.m. and should expect to stay until 8:30 p.m. Those gymnasts who are in Level 3 and 4 who don’t usually practice on Friday should be there for this event. Level 5-Optionals will practice as normal.

Gymnasts will be evaluated by Wildcard coaches on one routine and will have the opportunity to show specific skills on their current and possibly next level. No gymnast will lose their spot on team as a result of this tryout. This is not a tryout to be on our team, just to secure a spot on the current level.  We have no set number of gymnasts for a current level. If a gymnast is capable, we will put them on that level. We want our gymnast to be successful and it isn’t fun to train all season, be lacking skills and go to the first few meets of a season and score extremely low. If a gymnast is asked to go back to the level in which she competed last year, they will still be training the skills they currently train in order to get them confidently and work on perfecting them.

Gymnasts should wear an exhibition or competition leotard from the past. Parents, we ask that you not stay during this time. This is not a meet, but a regular practice, just with evaluations.

Friday & Saturday Schedule — Friday, June 6, Levels 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and Hopes will all have practice from 4:30-8:30 p.m. Levels 3-4 will be in a team tryout. Levels 5-8 and Hopes will practice as normal. There is no open gym on Friday.

Saturday, June 7, the Level 3s that normally come should not come. Level 2s should come as normal. New Level 2s and Fast Track can also come this Saturday for an extra practice.

Leotards — Leotard orders are due this Friday for the short sleeve exhibition leotards. That cost is $40 and we will size the gymnasts. Gymnasts who must order this leotard are:

Xcel, Fast Track, Level 2, Level 3, Level 4, Level 5, Level 6, Level 8/9, Hopes.

Leotard orders are due next Friday for the long-sleeved competition leotards. The cost is $140 for compulsory-level gymnasts and $150 for optional-level gymnasts. The following levels must order this leotard:

Level 2, Level 3, Level 4, Level 5, Level 6, Level 8/9, Hopes

Other levels including Fast Track and Xcel MAY order this leotard but it is not mandatory. We will be using the long-sleeve leotards for two years, so Fast Track may want to get two years out of the leotard.

Boys’ singlet orders are due next Friday and are $45. All team gymnasts must order this singlet.

We will be opening the GTM Sportswear team store again as well so you may purchase warm ups for the girls’ team (we will be using the same warm ups as last year), t-shirts and bags.

We will not be ordering Fourth of July leotards this year. Gymnasts should wear a previous year’s Fourth of July leotard for our parades. If you don’t have a Fourth of July leotard, we can indicate a good place to purchase one or you may be able to find a red, white, or blue leotard in our ProShop.

Banquet — The team awards banquet will be held on Sunday, June 29 at noon at the Country Springs Hotel and Water Park. Any boys or girls’ gymnasts who competed in two meets since August 2013 is expected and welcome to come to the banquet.

Gymnasts are free and guests are $15 (parents should probably attend the banquet). Coaches are also free for the banquet.

Reduced water park tickets are available for $16 (normally $25). Many of the gymnasts stay to swim. Parents who wish to stay in the water park, but not swim, may do so for a $5 guest pass.

Please let us know that you will attend by June 25. We can accommodate late comers, but it will help to know how many will be coming.

Gymnasts also typically dress up for this event. It is not a formal event necessarily, but the gymnasts do typically dress a little more upscale.

Summer Schedule — The summer schedule for boys and girls will begin on Tuesday, June 17.

Click here for the boys’ schedule.
Click here for the girls’ schedule.

Summer Meets & Shows — We will be doing a reduced summer show schedule this year. The following is a list of shows and events that we have at this point:

June 12-15: AAU Age Group Nationals (Disney Resort, Fla.)
June 21: Badger State Games (Mosinee)

At this point, the meet is still low on registrants, but organizers have said it’s looking more and more like the meet will be held. Competitive TOPs & HOPES — Starting with the summer schedule, we are planning to switch up TOPs and HOPES times. On Mondays, TOPS practice will go from 3:30-5 p.m. instead of 4-5:30 p.m.

On Saturdays, HOPEs will be moved to 9 a.m.-noon while Competitive TOPs will be moved to 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

There will be no TOPs on Monday, June 16.

Non-Competitive TOPs – We want to invite any gymnasts Fast Track through Level 9 who are interested in increasing their strength, conditioning, balance and form to join the Non-competitive TOPs group this summer.  Non-Competitive TOPs will practice on Tuesday mornings from 9-11 a.m. and the cost is $20 per month.  Gymnasts from this group will work on the TOPs routines and skills and also have the opportunity to try out for Competitive TOPs if they are 10 years old or younger.  It it definitely an excellent way to gain a competitive advantage.

Open Gym Schedule — This is a reminder of the open gym schedule for the summer. There is no longer a Saturday night open gym. That will return in September. There are no more Friday evening open gyms until September. Friday afternoon open gyms will begin Friday, June 20. Those are held from 12:30 p.m.-2 p.m.

There is no open gym this Friday, June 6, or next Friday, June 13.

Team Prices for Summer Camp — Wildcard Gymnastics will hold three summer camps as usual. We will offer a significant discount for our team members. The cost for camp for the team gymnasts is $150. Team kids will be practicing their regular daytime practice hours while in camps and will not be participating in camp activities during those practices. On days or times in which campers do not have practice and in between practices, they will be participating in the camp activities. Do not register for this on the web site as it will charge you the full $275. Please see someone at the front desk to register for our camps.

Camp dates are: July 7-12, July 21-25 and Aug. 4-8.Attending a Gymnastics Away Camp- We highly recommend that Wildcard competitive gymnasts try to attend a gymnastics camp.  It is really good for them to experience gymnastics in a new/different environment with coaches that they aren’t used to, and with other gymnasts from other gyms. Gymnastics camps are a chance for the gymnasts to learn new skills, perfect old ones, and work out of their comfort zone.  If you are interested in sending your child to a gymnastics camp this summer, please let feel free to ask one of our coaches.  There are a lot of good camps out there and we can definitely recommend a few.  (Some recommendations: Porter, any of the UW schools, UIC, Hamline, Flip Fest, and many more.)
