Motivation Homework, Level 2 State Meet, Success Wall Additions

Motivation Homework — Parents, click here for this weeks’ gymnastics homework. It’s a PDF file that you can print out and talk through with your gymnast. It’s about sustaining motivation over the course of a long season.

Level 2 State Meet Program — All compulsory level gymnasts are encouraged to submit a color drawing for the Level 2 State Meet program. Please have them submit this by Monday, November 18. We will pick the best drawings of each of the four events for the cover of the program. Please have your gymnast put their name on the back of their submission. Gymnasts will get credit for doing the drawings in the program.

Individual Photos, Girls’ State Meet Apparel and Good Luck Ads

Individual & Level Team Photos — Individual and Level team photos will take place the week of Thanksgiving. We will do what we can taking some individual pictures the Monday and Tuesday of practice that week, but the majority of the open times will occur on Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving. Gymnasts can sign up for a 10-minute spot and we will do at least three poses and a head shot of all gymnasts. We will do Level photos on Monday and Tuesday, which will take up the majority of time those two days. For those families going out of town during the holiday season, we will try to accommodate on Monday and Tuesday.

The following will be times for the Level photos (all gymnasts for the appropriate level should be at practice on that day):
Saturday, Nov. 23 — Girls’ Level 2 winter/spring (currently Gold Bugs II competing)
Monday, Nov. 25 — Boys’ All Levels (including Level 3), Girls’ Level 3, Girls’ Level 4
Tuesday, Nov. 26 — Girls’ Level 2, Girls’ Level 5, Girls’ Level 8, Girls’ Level 9
Friday, Nov. 29 — Individual Photos
Saturday, Nov. 30 — Individual Photos

Gymnasts should have their competition leotards (singlets, pants and socks for Level 4-7 boys and t-shirt and shorts for Level 3 boys) with them on these days. They will not practice in these, but will change into them. If they don’t have them, they will not be in their level photo.

Girls’ Xcel will take level and individual photos later, after their leotards arrive.

A schedule of 10 minute time slots will be available on the wall in the main lobby in the next few days. Even if your gymnast isn’t planning on purchasing any of the photos, we ask that all gymnasts participate because we use these photos later in the year for the success wall, website and banquet videos. Individual photo times will also be available on Monday and Tuesday. Please reserve these times for those who will be out of town on Friday and Saturday during Thanksgiving.

This year, we are just making the photos of your child available to each family. This will include the all-team photo, the level photo, the headshot and three posed photos. We will sell digital copies of the photos to each family for $10 per gymnast (so if you have two children, you will pay $20). This will include the copyright release. At that point, it is up to you to do with those as you wish, be it post to Facebook or order photo gifts from a service such as Snapfish or Walgreens.

Girls’ Level 2 State Meet Good Luck Ads — Like many other state meets, we are offering good luck ads for the Level 2 State Meet Program. This is your opportunity to wish your child good luck at her first USA Gymnastics-sanctioned state championship.

As the host, we are offering $5 off the cost of the ad to our families and will provide the design work at no charge. Click here for the order form and go to page 3 for sizes and costs (please disregard the flowers order as we will provide flowers for all our gymnasts as per Wildcard tradition). The deadline stated on the ad is Nov. 10, but we will allow until Nov. 15 for the submission and payment of Girls’ Level 2 State Meet Good Luck Ads.

Please encourage relatives, teachers, friends, etc. to purchase a Good Luck Ad for the Level 2 State Meet as the gymnasts think it’s really special to see their own names/pictures in the meet program.  The meet program makes a fantastic keepsake for your child’s gymnastics career.

Apparel for the Level 2 state meet, hosted at Wildcard Gymnastics, will not be available for pre-order.

Girls’ Level 3-5 State Meet Apparel Orders & Good Luck Ads — Level 3-5 State Meet Apparel orders are due to Wildcard Gymnastics by Nov. 13. Good Luck Ads are due to LaFleur’s Gymnastics (the host gym), by Nov. 9. More information on these products can be found here.

Change in Level 8/9 Meet Schedule — Due to the fact that the AAU District Meet is over the final weekend of spring break for many gymnasts, we are dropping that meet from the schedule. Several of the team members indicated they enjoyed competing at the Altius Pink Ribbon Meet, where they get special leotards. Therefore, we are altering the schedule to include this meet for the Level 8 and 9 gymnasts instead of the April AAU District Championships. The Altius Pink Ribbon meet is scheduled for January 25-26. This is also the first meet for Xcel, so it will be good to have a full team in attendance.

The Ultimate Guide to Motivation – How to Achieve Any Goal

Being that this is a meet week again, here is a toughness training assignment for the team gymnasts.  This assignment focuses on goals setting and motivation to reach those goals.  Please print this out for your gymnast. Let’s see what we can accomplish this week!

“Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal.” – Henry Ford

One of the biggest challenges in meeting any goal, whether it be related to productivity, waking early, changing a habit, exercising, or just becoming happier, is finding the motivation to stick with it. If you can stick with a goal for long enough, you’ll almost always get there eventually. It just takes patience, and motivation.

Motivation is the key, but it’s not always easy, day in and day out, to find that motivation.

How Does Motivation Work?
Motivation is what drives you toward a goal, what keeps you going when things get tough, the reason you get up early to exercise or work late to finish a project. There are all kinds of motivations, of course, from positive to negative. Having a boss threaten to fire you is motivation — you’ll likely work harder to complete a project with that kind of pressure. But I find that positive motivation works better — if it’s something you really want to do, you’ll do a much better job than to avoid something you don’t want (such as being fired).

So motivation, in its best form, is a way for you to want to do something. There may be times, for example, when you don’t feel like getting up early, and in those times you may seriously just want to sleep in (not that there’s anything wrong with that). But if you have a reason to want to get up early, something you really, really want to do, you’ll jump up out of bed with excitement.

The best motivation, then, is a way for you to really want something, to get excited about it, to be passionate about it. Remember that, as there are many other types of motivation (especially negative), but positive motivation works the best.

8 Ways to Motivate Yourself From the Beginning
If you start out right, you have a much better chance of succeeding. Here are some tips for starting out:

  1. Start small. Start out with a ridiculously easy goal, and then grow from there.
  2. One goal. Choose one goal, for now, and focus on it completely.
  3. Examine your motivation. Know your reasons. Give them some thought … and write them down.
  4. Really, really want it. It has to be something you’re passionate about, something you’re super excited about, something you want deeply.
  5. Commit publicly. None of us likes to look bad in front of others. Hold yourself accountable.
  6. Get excited. Well, it starts with inspiration from others but you have to take that excitement and build on it.
  7. Build anticipation. This will sound hard, and many people will skip this tip. By delaying your start, you are building anticipation, and increasing your focus and energy for your goal.
  8. Print it out, post it up. Print out your goal in big words.

______________________________________________

Set a goal for this next competition/week. It can be one goal or one for each event.   Write your goal(s) below. Draw or find pictures to go along with this goal:

Use the 8 steps above to help you achieve that goal.   Write down what you will do this week to achieve that goal.

Spring Meet Information

Happy Halloween — This is a reminder that there is no team practice tonight. Trick or treat at Alison, Blain, Hallie, Bradyn and West’s neighborhood. Meet at the Fowler house at 5:15 p.m. Trick or treat begins at 5:30 p.m. Please pick up your child by 8:30 p.m. The address is 520 N. Park Blvd. (near Bluemound and Sunnyslope, one mile east of Brookfield Square).

Level 2 Winter/Spring Season Meet Fees — For those gymnasts in our Gold Bugs II competing group, the following is our meet schedule. Meet fees are $155 and includes four meets and membership in AAU. The meet fees are due Nov. 20:

Feb. 8-9 at Midwest Twisters Invitational (Wisconsin Center, Downtown)
Mar. 2 Wildcard Cruise Classic (Wildcard Gymnastics)
Mar. 15-16 at Shamrock Invitational (Gymtastics, Watertown)
April 5 at Carousel Invitational (Carousel Gymnastics, Plover)

Current compulsory level gymnasts will have the opportunity to do these meets as well, most likely, at the next level, starting with the Wildcard home meet in March. Information on fees will come out after the conclusion of the compulsory season.

Xcel Winter/Spring Season Meet Fees — For those gymnasts in our Xcel program, the following is our meet schedule. Meet fees are $220 and includes four meets and membership in USA Gymnastics. Half of these meet fees are due Nov. 20 and the other half are due Jan. 20:

Jan. 25-26 at Altius Pink Ribbon Invitational (Altius, Franklin)
March 2 Wildcard Cruise Classic (Wildcard Gymnastics, Brookfield)
April 12-13 at Midwest Twisters Hartland Invitational (Midwest Twisters, Heartland)
May 3-4 at Xcel State Championships (Scamps, Kenosha)

Xcel gymnasts may pick up an additional meet for an extra $45, competing at the Carousel Invitational in Plover. This is not mandatory.

Xcel gymnasts will also need to purchase the competition leotard for $50. Those orders need to be placed by December 1, so we need your payment for those prior to December 1. Xcel gymnasts may also order the same warm-ups that our other team gymnasts have. Those are $175 and we will let you know the ordering process once we have that re-established through our vendor. The warm-ups are not mandatory.

One Final Thank You — We’d like to re-iterate a giant thank you to all parents and gymnasts who helped with the Wild Wild West Classic. We had 11 teams and visitors from Iowa and Minnesota. We have received nothing but positive reviews and we have all of you to thank for that. Whether you helped tear down the gym or build it back up, helped with scoring, helped with concessions or provided food for our coaches and  judges, we owe you a hearty thank you!

Success at Wild Wild West Classic — We nearly doubled our success wall photos at the Wildcard Cruise Classic. The following gymnasts were added to the success wall (apologies if we miss anyone here). To qualify for the wall, girls’  gymnasts need a first-place finish or a 9.0 (9.5 on Level 2 or 3 vault) or boys’ gymnasts need a 10.0 or higher or a first-place finish:

Flight out — Frontier charter from O’hare at 8 a.m., Wed., Jan. 15, arriving around 11 a.m.
Hotel — Royal Mayan (hotel next to competition site)
Return flight — Frontier charter to O’Hare at 4:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 20 arriving around 8:15 p.m.

We will likely take a bus to and from the airport. This itinerary gives us four full days in Cancun and the better part of two others.

Travel cost (estimate is based on four people per room) is $560 and does not include ground transportation.

Meet fees are $120 and are due by Nov. 5. Otherwise, all that is needed is a $50 deposit per person. Girls’ optional gymnasts, coaches will chaperone if you can’t travel with a parent and we will have an adult in each room or connecting rooms.  The meet looks like it will be Saturday only.

Home Meet Week!

Home Meet Spirit Week — To increase team spirit, gymnasts were asked to wear purple on Fridays on meet weekends. This week, since its our home meet, we are asking our gymnasts to do something for each day. Gymnasts should use the following daily themes this week:

Monday — Backwards Day (wear your leotards backwards)
Tuesday — Beach Day (wear swimsuits to practice and other beach attire)
Wednesday — Western Day (get in the spirit of the meet with your western wear)
Thursday — Leggings and Crazy Hair Day (the brightest leggings and craziest hair you can come up with)
Friday — Purple and Black Day (exhibition leotards or other purple leotards)

Also, we encourage the gymnasts to come early or stay later and cheer on their teammates. It’s also a great opportunity for the lower level gymnasts to see the optional-level gymnasts compete at home or it’s a good opportunity for the girls to see the boys compete and vice versa.

Friday Practice Schedule — With a number of schools off on Friday and with the gym in meet set up with limited equipment, we’re going to alter the practice schedule in order to ease some of the number of gymnasts in the gym at one time. The following schedule is for Friday:

8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. — Levels 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 (for those who can make it)
4:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. — Levels 2 and 3
6:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. — Levels 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 (for those who couldn’t make it earlier. The 4s also competing Level 5 in the AAU session may come to both practices)

Congratulations — We had yet another successful meet on the girls’ side at the CSA Fall Challenge on Saturday and the boys’ had a good pre-season meet at Sheboygan YMCA as well. The following gymnasts will be added to the success wall with either a 9.0 (9.500 on vault for level 3) or a first-place finish:

Level 3 Girls: THE ENTIRE TEAM for its first-place finish, Aaliyah for a 9.050 on floor and a first-place all-around finish, Kamryn for a 9.100 on beam and a 9.050 on floor, Taylor for a 9.100 on beam and for first-place in the all-around. (Meet results aren’t available on-line so we don’t know who might have won events at this time.)

Level 4 Girls: Delaney for a 9.375 on beam, a 9.175 on floor, a 9.100 on bars and first place finishes on vault, beam, floor and all-around; Camille for a 9.000 on bars and a first-place finish on bars.

The boys also did well with everyone scoring 9s or better. The following gymnasts reached that mark (9.5 or higher for Level 4 vault):

Level 4 Boys: West with a 10.0 on vault, a 9.1 on floor, a 9.9 on rings and a 10.4 on high bar; Eli with a 9.8 on vault, a 10.6 on rings, and a  9.7 on high bar; Andy with a 9.5 on vault, a 10.6 on rings and a 10.3 on high bar.

Level 5 Boys: Max with a 10.0 on vault, a 9.1 on parallel bars, a 9.3 on floor, an 11.7 on rings and an 11.0 on high bar; Diego with a 10.3 on vault, an 11.4 on rings, and a 10.4 on high bar; Ian with a 9.8 on vault, a 9.0 on parallel bars, an 11.9 on rings and a 9.8 on high bar.

Level 6 Boys: Myles with a 9.9 on vault, a 9.1 on parallel bars, an 11.4 on rings and an 11.5 on high bar; Bryce with a 10.2 on vault, an 11.2 on rings, and a 10.7 on high bar.

Level 7 Boys: Reed with a 12.0 on vault, a 9.2 on parallel bars and a 10.8 on rings.

Spaces still need to be filled for meet volunteers — We still have several spots available for volunteers for the meet, especially in the last session and with the gym re-arrangement. Also please note, we did not know of the Friday session when we scheduled this meet. This is becoming more and more normal for gyms to have competitions on Friday night. We have no way of knowing or controlling who does this or what levels are picked to compete on Friday night.

Home Meet Volunteering, Bring Comp Leos on Friday/Saturday

Wild Wild West Classic Volunteer Opportunities — With Wildcard’s annual fall meet just two-and-a-half weeks away, we are well in the planning stages to host what we hope will be our best meet ever. We have close to 200 gymnasts attending. We are holding all sessions on Saturday, Oct. 26 (if you haven’t seen the meet schedule, it is available on the blog). Boys will be competing in their “mock meet” at this in the first session, as will the optional-level gymnasts in the final session, so virtually all Wildcard’s Team Gymnasts will be competing.

As a result, we will need plenty of help to run the meet. Gymnasts can help where appropriate. We will have the list posted on the wall in the office by the end of Thursday. While we usually have plenty of help, people don’t always indicate what session and duty they are volunteering for so we are left scrambling to get people in the right places. Please sign up so we don’t have that confusion and hectic time prior to the meet. You should volunteer for one session that isn’t your child’s session, so you can see them compete. There are very few volunteer opportunities where you will get to see your child compete the whole time.

Also, not all volunteer opportunities are on Saturday. We will need individuals to build goody bags on Thursday and to help arrange the gym on Thursday night as well as re-arrange the gym on Saturday night.

We are also in need of some area “captains,” someone in charge of a specific area for the whole of the meet. This can be split among people for the course of the day. Areas we need captains for are: concessions, admissions, front desk (phone answering and leotard sales), coaches/judges rooms. We will also need these captains for the Level 2 state meet in December. These captains will be the ones “training” the set of volunteers for each session and will have some general supervisory and decision making duties.

We also encourage everyone to attend multiple sessions, especially the gymnasts. Teams usually do their best at their home meets and that can be accomplished with lots of support.

Success Wall Additions — With the girls’ third meet of the season in the books and the first meet of the season completed for Level 2, we are again acknowledging those gymnasts who scored a 9.0 (9.5 or above for Level 2 and 3 vault). We aren’t sure if this is going to be a weekly thing but we’re taking advantage of the blog post to do it again. As a result, we are going to also acknowledge the first meet successes. Take a look at the wall and encourage your child to earn a spot on it:

Midwest Twisters Meet:
Level 3: Ella J. (vault winner), Aaliyah K. (9.25 on bars, winner on bars), Emily G. (winner on beam)
Level 4: Madeline C. (9.1 on beam), Sofia B. (vault winner)

M&M Meet:
Level 2: Angela B. (9.000 on beam, 9.050 on floor), Ayanna L. (9.050 on floor), Mariyah L. (9.000 on beam), Anya M. (9.050 on floor)
Level 3: Aaliyah K. (9.150 on bars, bars winner, all-around winner), Taylor T. (9.150 on floor, floor winner), Kamryn W. (beam winner)
Level 4: Delaney H. (9.000 on vault, vault winner, floor winner, all-around winner)
Level 5: Elie L. (vault winner)

Bring Competition Leotards on Friday/Saturday — As our usual tradition when we host an invitational meet, we have an introduction video for our team. We need to spend a few minutes on Friday and Saturday filming the gymnasts for the video. If all girls’ gymnasts could bring their competition leotard on Friday (or Saturday for Level 2s) we can accomplish this. It will only take a few minutes and will probably occur during each groups’ conditioning.

And Finally — We want to thank all of you for all that you do for us. We know that the commitment to gymnastics is greater than most youth sports. We appreciate all the time and effort that go into everything we do. Our teams are off to a great start this season. We hope to keep up this momentum for the rest of the season and into the spring boys, optional girls and Xcel seasons.
